Sofas : At Least A Thousand Options!

by Mark Walters

Almost every household in the first world has a sofa; it’s pretty much considered an essential piece of furniture. In fact, can you even remember the last time that you went to a house that didn’t have one?

It originated in the time of the Renaissance period and back then they were quite simple, consisting of just of a wooden framework upholstered with leather. Nowadays however, they are more often than not a much fancier affair. Padding and spring cushions are included almost without exception, and there are a whole host of textiles that they can be upholstered with.

There are various types of sofas for you to choose from. There is the British loveseat, which is meant for two people. There is the settee, which can typically accommodates three people, though settees for five can be found. There is the divan, which is a sofa that has only a partial back rest, or even none at all.

There is the chaise lounge, which is a particularly long sofa that has only one arm rest. There is the canape, which is a three seater than ranks looks over comfort. There is the ottoman, which is the smallest and the simplest sofa, and which has back rest and no arm rests.

A fairly modern twist on the traditional sofa is sectional sofas. These are made up of two or three small sections that be put together to form a complete sofa or kept apart to be used as independent ones.

It can seem like the possible combinations available are endless. You could buy a plush sofa with leather upholstery and spring cushions, a simple sofa made of foam and upholstered with linen, or anything in between. You could literally spend tens of thousands of dollars on a single sofa. You don’t need to though, and even those on a limited budget will still have a multitude of options to choose from.

Ultimately though, despite all of the unique characteristics that you can find in sofas, the number one consideration for most people is comfort when sitting on it. Afterall, what else will it be used for!
