Proper Treatment For Coughs Is Important

During common flu, you are often afflicted with painful cough and sore throat. These symptoms should not be neglected and one should consult a doctor immediately and get these properly treated.

Coughs occur because the defences of the body propel them so as to clear the air passage in the throat which supplies air to the lungs. They are not just a result of physiological complications but can also occur due to psychological reasons. The former is caused when a person gets afflicted with cough caused by external irritants like environmental pollutants, cigarette smoke, dust etc or because of a medical disorder. The latter is a habit of sneezing or coughing in an individual without any definite physical reason, and it is known as ‘habitual coughing’ or Streruphilia in medical terminology.

Cough can often be acute or chronic, and can have an identifiable nature which depends on the intensity and duration of coughing attacks. Painful and recurrent coughs which stay for not more than three weeks can be because of contagious as well as non-contagious ailments. Examples of physical ailments of one time nature which result in painful coughing are pneumonia and sinusitis and examples of complications triggering chronic coughs are bronchitis and asthma.

It is important that you visit a doctor and get a proper diagnosis of the root cause and severity of your cough diagnosed so that proper treatment can be prescribed. Depending on the identified root cause, doctors can prescribe many kinds of medications such as antihistamines, antibiotics or other cough suppressants. However, chronic coughing might require the patient to undergo prolonged therapies, which can continue for months until the problem is cured.

As with any other ailment, prevention of cough is much better than having to deal with it later when you become badly affected by it. Abstaining from smoking, exercising daily and taking a balanced diet that builds immunity and improves overall health can help keep cough at bay.
